Just when we thought that homosexuality had subsided as a social feux pas…
First, I want to extend my grievances to Billy Lucas’ family. No parent should ever have to watch their child die, ESPECIALLY by their own hands [so to speak] do to hazing and hate crime.
William “Billy” Lucas of Indiana, student at Greensburg Community High School, committed suicide at 15 years old by asphyxiation after being bullied incessantly. The administration failed (not surprising) to notice the severity of the bullying, even though they publicly admit that bullying had been a reoccurring issue at this school.
And due to homophobic/religiously ‘modest’ perspective on LGBT rights for teens in the United States, these are the measures taken:
Plans for comprehensive anti-bullying reform have met resistance from groups like Focus on the Family who recently claimed that LGBT inclusive anti-bullying policies are a way for gay groups to impose a “gay agenda”on schools and indoctrinate youth. Advocates point out that the only “gay agenda” here is this: to create safe schools free of harassment and bullying that leads to tragedies like this.
Dan Savage, popular columnist, (I myself have been a fan for about 6 years now) activist for LGBT rights and acceptance, started the “It Gets Better” campaign aimed towards gay youth, and with the help of Perez Hilton, 60+ celebrities have joined in support of the cause, including two absolutely lovely ladies, Ciara and Lala Anthony. Their efforts (with the help of youtube) delivered effortlessly with an almost maternal bedside manor, really touched me. I can only hope that with America’s youth being as fascinated with celebrity as they are, that they can eat, live, breathe social acceptance as advocated by some of their biggest idols.
